how long does it take to get food poisoning? i am feeling sick all of a sudden.  an hour ago i had a crab salad to eat...does it take longer for food poisoning to take hold?  could it be that?

Symptoms : Symptoms of food poisoning usually start  between four to 48 hours after eating contaminated food.  It is usually because you have eaten food contaminated with bacteria or other toxins. Common symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, loose bowel movements, aching muscles and possibly a fever.   I don't know if you have food poisoning, but if you do it could be from a meal earlier today or even from something that you ate yesterday.

No burping does not: No burping is not a sign of food poisoning.Burping is caused by excess air in your stomach, you can try over the counter semithicone  which may help with burping and if associated with esophageal reflux you can take Omeprazole or Prevacid (lansoprazole) to neutralize the acid.

this is the second time in two weeks i've thrown up after eating a salad. could it really be i have food poisoning or do i have some sort of allergy?

Probable: Unless both occasions were from the same batch of salad when spoilage would be suspected, you had likely anaphylactic reactions to something in the salad. The chances for anaphylaxis (a life-threatening form of allergic response) are higher when there are itching, flushing, and /or hives.  If you can't figure out which ingredient in the salad caused your problem, consult an allergist.

No: This happens to people all the time. If the egg seemed normal, don't worry. There's actually another membrane that protects the part that can be infected from salmonella. If you become very anxious about food poisoning, perhaps you can read up on the realities, and if you're still concerened, your physician can help you.

The treatment for both is the same- rest, drinking plenty of liquids and ginger ale,avoiding spicy foods and harsh roughage

By what you eat: Food poisoning doesn't spread from person to person.  Rather, bacteria or virus is eaten which causes a reaction in your body.  Everyone who eats the same food has similar reaction i.e. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea , abdominal pain, etc.

Fluids, maybe meds: Supportive care, fluids, brat diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, tea), maybe meds.  Not always antibiotics; be careful using antidiarrheals-can retain the germ.  Probiotics can be helpful.  Contact md if prolonged, fever, bleeding, can't keep things down or in.

Be cautious : Of where st what you eat.  When you eat out make sure your trust the food preparation and staff hygiene.  Avoid ordering raw or under cooked foods. At home wash your produce well.  Don't use the same cutting boards for meats as you do veggies.  Wash your cutlery well.  Cook your food thoroughly.
