Rupture: If injected directly upon. Orally little if any effect, but not so on bones.

: Prednisone is effective in most inflammatory conditions. However, side effect could be an issue. If there is no contraindication for taking an NSAID such as ibuprofen, naprosen, etc., I would rely on this med first.

my gp said i most likely have a ganglion cyst on left achilles it is very painful and tough to walk i have had it for 3 days. 1. how long do i wait to see a foot dr? 2. do these go away? and what can i do for pain? antibiotics? cold pack? prednisone?

: Achilles tendinopathy should be included in the differential diagnosis because you have too much pain for an Achilles ganglion cyst. You can apply cold compress and take ibuprofen OTC if you do not have problem with stomach or kidneys. More than 50% of ganglion cyst will resolve spontaneously, some needs to be removed. You should be referred to a podiatrist. Good luck.

Typically no: There was some initial research about Anabolic steroids causing weak tendons, but this has been tough to prove again.  We also use steroid injections to treat tendinopathies.  As such, i highly doubt Prednisone is causing any tendon weakening.

Yes and NO!: If you have inflammatory tendinitis, more likely yes.  If the tendinitis is mechanical-more likely not, but it may relieve pain!

Yes it can: Historically, chronic steroid use including the use of Prednisone is implicated in tendon weakness and rupturesthis is seen more commonly w/injections of cortisone meds. In or around tendons..Check w/ a rheumatologist concerning the risks and side effects of chronic steroid use.Best of luck!

i was on prednisone 30 days to disrupt headache cycle. soon after the tendons in my body inflamed for months. dr.wants me to repeat. is this rt pred?

NO: however, you should get a full rheumatology consultstion, including repeat CBC, sed rate, rheumatoid profile, ANA , ASLO and uric acid levels.

It should: You do however need to rest it as well as prescibed by your doctor. If you do not it will likely recur.

Perhaps but be aware: Tendonitis and rupture have been reported with levofloxacin and other anitbiotics of the same class ( highest for ciprofloxacin). Risk factors for tendon disorders include age greater than 60 years, corticosteroid therapy, renal failure, diabetes mellitus, and a history of musculoskeletal disorders.  Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms (redness, stiffness, swelling) develop.

i completely severedmy right achilles tendon in july 2013. what is the healing time and possible residual effects?

Accepted Answer

3-6 months: It needed surgery. You probably need to be in a cast non weightbearing for 12+ weeks but  if it was completely severed it should have been surgically reattached. If it didn't reattach with immobilization the consequences are serious. You should have this looked at. I hope it is not too late.
