Dangerous: An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy implanting in a place other than the intrauterine cavity. Most are in the fallopian tube. Other site include ovary, uterine cornua, cervix, etc. If untreated , they most likely will rupture causing internal hemorrhage which is life threatening.  There have been cases of ectopics implanting in the abdomen and developing. These are rare and very dangerous.

can you have an early ectopic pregnancy with a negative pregnancy test? i have pcos and endo im trying to conceive but ive had abnormal bleeding and excruciating pain on my lower right side?

Accepted Answer

: Maybe. To turn a UPT positive the conception must have attached, usually in the womb and had time for the placental/fetal complex to make the chemicals that turn tests positive. If it is stuck in the tube, it may not create the chemicals. If you are in pain go in immediately, these can be fatal.

Pain in pelvis: The typical signs of an ectopic pregnancy include:
1.  Late period
2.  Positive pregnancy test
3.  Periodic vaginal bleeding / spotting
4.  Pelvic pain on one side or the other

if you are 10 days late, and your pregnancy test is negative, then an ectopic is extremely unlikely.  Go in to your doctor for a confirmatory blood test.

Not likely: If what you described is serum HCG level of 1.2, that is not compatible with pregnancy. You apparently have had transvaginal ultrsound and that should have picked up a mass if you had ectopic pregnancy.

Usually not: An ectopic pregnancy with a living conception will produce the same hormones that an intrauterine pregnancy does, and noticing this is part of the diagnosis.  If death occurs, the levels will drop off.  If an ectopic pregnancy has affected you or a loved one, you have my sympathy -- my hope is you will be able, if you wish, to go on to have a healthy child.

Yes: Depends on sensitivity of HCG test. If you test too early will show up negative. Also, remember you can have an ectopic and an intrauterine pregnancy at same time. Pain and abdominal pain in child bearing ages should get pregnancy test and ultrasound.

Not typical: Most ectopic pregnancies are accompanied by a positive pregnancy test. On rare occasion, you can have an ectopic pregnancy in which the preg test is negative.

Possible: Pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate, especially early in the pregnancy, so it would be possibble to have an ectopic pregnancy with a negative pregnancy test. An ultrasound can rule this out.
