Middle ear effusion: This is more likely due to inflammation and allergy than an infection, but to cover both bases, I suggest an antibiotic and strong antihistamine at bedtime for 5-10 days for relief. This should be followed by skin or blood testing to find out your allergy triggers to avoid and reduce symptoms in the future

i had grommets inserted when i was 5 three times and now as a adult i get sharp inner ear pain that usually last to a minute.  is this normal?

Not from the tubes: Very unlikely the ear pain you are getting has anything to do with the tubes you had as a child. Most like cause is strain of the tempromandibulr joint(tmj). Try motrin, soft diet for a week and don't chew gum, ice, etc.  Try to chew opposite the side that hurts. If this doesn't work, see your physician.

36 yo female with right ear pain for 2 days (no fever, drainage or other symptoms). history of ear infections as adult and child. i take azathioprine for crohn's. should i go to doctor or wait?

Earache-wait?: Hard question.  Pain is your body's way of saying that ain't right.  Generally i would say two days, you should be seen.  Barring obvious signs of serious illness and a contraindication to using decongestants, afrin nasal spray, otc antihistamines like Claritin or zyrtec and valsalva maneuvers (popping ear like you coming down a mountain) may do the trick. Don't forget teeth can cause ear pain.

Etiology: Ear pain or otalgia is not necessarily the result of ear disease.  If your hearing is essentially normal, the most common cause of otalgia is disease of the dental structures, jaw muscle spasm, dental infection, arthritis of the jaw joint.  Other causes of referred pain can reflect diseases of the neck (cervical arthritis) or diseases of the throat or even larynx. Easing pain requires a diagnosis.

Earpain: You may have fluid in your ears (serous otitis) the pressure of the fluid causes the pain especially when you are lying down.See an ENT specialist. You may have to be on steroids to reduce the pain.

See ENT: Ear pain that is severe enough to wake you up and us present only on a lying down position could be due to a lesion present in your ear that is compressing nearby structures when you lie flat. It does not sound like an infection or inflammation. I would strongly recommend visiting an ENT specialist for review

TMJ: This could be the TMJ (temperomandibular joint). As you lay down, and turn to your side.. You're likely putting pressure on the joint.. Taking Motrin before bed might help but Motrin can disrupt sleep. An eval by your dentist or your local ENT may help as well.

have slight ear pain after being in the mountains yesterday. i have to fly tomorrow night will i be ok?it would cost a lot to see a dr here.

Possibly: It sounds like the tube that equalizes pressure in the middle ear is sluggish.  That means you may have trouble with the pressure changes.  No problem with the flying, it is the landing that might really hurt. If you must fly, try some sudafed before you board.  Then sniff a littl afrin (oxymetazoline) while airborne and chew some gum.  Keep some pain pills handy just in case.....
