Looking: A physician or other care provider can determine the difference between fluid build-up(serous otitis) and an actual infection by examination of the ears with an otoscope--serous fluid id clear/orange and may have air bubbles, an infection will be yellow/white, the eardrum will be opaque, dark red or distorted. Fever and pain are not adequate to differentiate the two.

why is your balance off when you have an ear infection? i have one where fluid is coming out of my ear does this make me wobbly/ hard to balance?

Yes: While a middle ear infection will not make you too wobbly, extension of the infection into the inner ear or vestibular (balance) system will make you dizzy . Fluid coming put of your ear has to be either from an infection of the ear canal or a perforated eardrum with a middle ear infection.  Accompanying vertigo suggests the latter. See your MD.

Effusion: If no fever the fluid should improve.  Try chewing gum and or lemon drops

Accepted Answer

Not usually: You can have fluid behind the eardrum without infection -- colds, allergies, and other things can cause this.  It needs to be rechecked at some point to ensure it's resolving, but unless it does become infected, no treatment is necessary at this time.

Most likely: Up to half of all people with a properly treated ear infection will have residual fluid in the middle ear space. This fluid often will muffle sounds and cause hearing loss at some frequency. Once the cause of the infection (ie, a cold) has resolved and the swelling of the tube between the throat and the ear improved, your hearing should definitely improve. If not, see your doctor.

Only swimmers ear: A true inner ear infection requires fluid accumulated behind the eardrum (usually due to the negative eustachian tube pressure from a cold). A swimmers ear is an outer ear infection due to swimming and involves the outer ear canal. The two entities are entirely different and require different treatments

Not necessarily: 2 conditions can result in "fluid" draining from a baby's ear(s): the first is an infection in the ear canal ("otitis externa"); the second is an infection behind the ear drum ("otitis media") that has come through the ear drum and is draining. Some baby's simply accumulate some small amount of bath water in ear canal. If the fluid is not clear, or if the fluid smells bad, get to your doctor.

Not sure: If you have a swimmer's ear infection, the drops should usually help within 2-3 days. Stay out of the pool until the pain stops. Don't put cotton or Qtips in the ears- it will just push wax and other substances deeper into the ear canal.
