hi i had a d and c lost a lot of blood and 4 days later got put on birthright control which had estrogen, then i got dvt, i got sent to a hematologist?

Dvt and estrogen.: Taking oral birth control pills would increase your risk of developing DVT.  Most likely a hematologist would do an evaluation to see if you are prone to develop clots (hypercoagulable).  If you are prone to develop clots then taking BCP's would not be a good idea.  If you are not prone then a lower dose birth control pill may be more prudent.

i have aps (and hx of dvt), mild mvp, and wearing a pacemaker. my hematologist thinks of stopping my anticoagulant. is it a wise decision?

No.: You have a 15% of recurrence of DVT within 1 year and 50% recurrence within 10 years. With APS it may be even higher. If the DVT leads to a PE you have a 35% chance of death in the first 10 months.

hx of dvt 2000, pes 2004, l subclavian vein clot 2006.  all idiopathic.  now hematologist suggesting lifetime warfarin not necessary.  guideline?

Coumadin (warfarin) for life: I assume that you have been tested for a hypercoagulable state (e.g. Factor v leiden). Given your history, most doctors would place you on warfarin for life to prevent DVT and life-threatening pe.

i met with a hematologist and they believe my dvt is related to my carpel tunnel surgery 2 years ago.  they did not explain well and i am just wondering how they could be connected and if they are what the treatment is. ?

DVT prevention: Any surgery with general anesthesia carries at least a small risk of DVT. If you had a DVT at that time, you might be more susceptible to DVT now. Clarify with the hematologist if s/he meant this or some other connection. You don't provide nearly enough information to know whether you need treatment to prevent future DVT, such as an anticoagulant drug.

doctor confirmed my child has deep venous thrombosis and will need to follow up. will this be a longterm problem?

See vascular spclist: Leg swelling can sometimes be a recurrent or persistent problem.  Wearing support stockings for a year or two may be helpful.  Your child should see a vascular specialist.  Also a hematology evaluation may be necessary to see if your child has a hereditary tendency to form blood clot.

had pe and dvt on the right side of my body. now have lumpy.bumps on right side. about 5 times larger than left side. nothings makes it go down. im scared and dr doesnt seem to know?

: More information is needed. Where are the lumps and bumps? Are they vein like or fleshy? PE is in the lung and not visible and DVTs usually in the legs/arms where they legs are usually /swollen enlarged but not bumpy ( unless superficial DVT). Could do an ultrasound/CT or MRI to evaluate the affected area. F/u/w/ MD or ER

do compression stockings prevent dvt? so if you wear them does that mean you won't get dvt?

Nope: They do prevent DVT. However a thrombus/clot is a result of multiple factors, and a compression stocking can control (that too a degree) - one of them. There fore it cannot guarantee "that you won't get a dvt". But they do CUT down the risk of getting a DVT - so if your situation appropriates it, please do use it. I definitely ask my parents to use it while flying for long times.

Doppler Ultrasound: Duplex doppler ultrasound is the method of choice to assess for dvt.  Physical exam is no better than 50% sensitive/specific for the diagnosis of acute dvt.

do dvts come on gradually or suddenly?

DVT's : Tough question - but generally its a process - until a "critical mass" of clot has formed and thus a dvt.   Prolonged immobilization can cause blood to pool and "stagnate" and start to form micro clots - and things snow ball from there.   Certain medications carry a DVT risk factor - ie smokers who use birth control pills.

how long dvt treated?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Sometimes a DVT can be treated for as little as three months with blood thinners and sometimes it is longer, six months to a year.  It depends on the location,  extent,  and internal improvement in the blood clot.  A follow-up ultrasound can be helpful in determining how long it meets to be treated. I hope this helps.
