i work with waste auto batteries, the skin on my hands has come into contact with the acid and is now very dry and discoloured?

Accepted Answer

Acid on skin : Battery acid has a very low Ph and if exposed to skin may cause chemical burns. Prevention should include a barrier for protection; such as a pair of work gloves.
Dry skin and discoloration should resolve if exposure to acid stops. 
Any skin breakdown with redness or blisters should be evaluated by a physician in person.

is battery corrosion toxic? i was changing a remote and did it carelessly and inhaled some of it. will i be ok? it also touched my skin etc.

Acidic but dilutable: The substance that comes off of batteries is acidic and harmful but it is easily diluted by adding water. What you inhaled would have caused irritation in the airways but all of the fluids would have neutralized it quickly.  The area of the skin probably had more damage but even that is nothing to worry about.

what is blue battery corrosion in the eye?

Aging: As people get older they can develop a gray discoloration on the sclera, the white part of the eye.  It is benign.  Sometimes this can occur from using silver containing eyedrops.  Rarely, it can be from thining of the sclera from autoimmune or rare degenerative diseases.

Will be fine.: Li batteries in general are not very toxic.  Washing thoroughly will be fine.

Accepted Answer

Acid burns are bad!: Not a good thought. You will get burns and severe pain. Hand burns are called primary area burns requiring hospitalization, need for multiple surgeries if burns are deep which they can be with acid burns. The longterm sequelae include poor functioning hands and in some patients even loss of fingers.

Accepted Answer

You're ok: The danger from exposure to battery acid is an immediate chemical burn. If you didn't burn yourself and you have already washed your hands with a lot of water then you're ok. Soap or vinegar are basic and neutralize the acid but the important thing is to wash as quickly as possible with a lot of water. Just don't touch it again. And don't pour water on it, you can spread the acid. Scrape it off.

Generally no.: There are a large number of different Li batteries, but they are not usually toxic. Those that are more dangerous are not usually available to the general public. There might have been some immediate irritation of your nasal passages, but this should have resolved quickly especially if the exposure was small.

can going inside of a tablet computer to say replace the battery and touching the motherboard and circuit board would you be exposed to any chemicals inside? it has a prop 65 warning on it but didn't specify any chemicals. forgot to wash hands. ate?

Chemical contact :  This is unlikely to negatively impact your health. It is good to develop a habit of washing hands before eating.

how dangerous is white powder leaking from alkaline battery? should i wash my hands with water afterwards and i should be safe?

Skin/Eye Irritant: Carefully remove the leaking batteries and dispose of them according to your local regulations. The white powder in alkaline batteries is potassium hydroxide which can irritate your skin and eyes so be sure to wear gloves and goggles before touching the batteries. Wash hands well if you come into contact with it. Don't rub your eyes.

i as carrying a car battery and got the battery acid on my hands i washed my hands with cool water and baking soda still burns what do i do ?

Accepted Answer

Have patience: Your treatment was appropriate. You burned the skin and it will take time to heal. If the skin is not broken you might want to use a very mild soap to wash with and apply a hand cream with aloe to the appropriate area. Scarring may occur depending on how soon you gave your self the first aid treatment. If increasing redness and pain continues after a couple of days see your family physician.
