i've used eye drops, nasal spray for dry nose, and a good allergy medication. can you recommend anything else for me?

Symptoms?: What are your symptoms?  Sounds like you are trying to treat allergies. Some of what you are doing may be exacerbating your symptoms if they are dry burning irritated eyes.

Cool mist will do: Cool mist should be fine.

Exam/x-ray: Please get examined and if needed get an x-ray. The specks may be from small broken blood vessels in your nose or throat, possibly a lung involvement. Please get examined ASAP.

See doc: It appears that you may have a condition known as sicca syndrome wherein not enough saliva, nasal mucus, and tear are produced.  However this condition is not common at your age. Try sucking on sugarless gum or lemon drops to stimulate saliva (Biotene oral products may also be helpful) and using nasal gel or saline spray to keep nose moist. See doc if problem persists.

NO: No going without socks can cause other problems such as dry dkin, cracked heel, excessive perspiration.

Accepted Answer

Natural remedy: Yes there are natural treatments.  In my experience as a board certified otolaryngologist, these treatments do not work as well as mainstream medical treatments like antihistamines, nasal steroids, allergy shots (immunotherapy).  If symptoms are fairly mild, then you may do ok with avoidance and natural remedies.

Over the counter: Most with nasal allergies use what is available at any pharmacy: antihistamines and decongestants; now even a topical nasal steroid (Nasacort) is over the counter in the US. Nasal saline is also very helpful.

Allergic rhinitis: For prophylaxis, i recommend singulair, (montelukast) 10 mg at bedtime daily to be started at least 2 weeks before the season and continued until the season is over. Alternatives will be the otc usual antihistamines or prescriptions of their derivatives. In addition, nasal antihistiamine sprays are also available as well as steroid nasal sprays. Please ask your doctor.

for the last week or so when i blow my nose in the morning there is a little blood, after the first few blows is gone. its light red. mostly only the right nostril. also my nose is congested one nostril then it switches. no runny nose. allergies?

Nose bleed : The membrane that covers the inside of your nose is quite thin and has a great deal of blood supply. If the membrane becomes dry or irritated it can bleed a limited amount. Usually if the bleeding becomes difficult to stop or is mixed with discolored mucus is important to see your doctor to determine other causes like sinus infection or a deeper abrasion of the inside of the nose.
