Depends …: On how much & how often you drink. Probably not the spleen but rather an enlarged liver or inflamed pancreas if you drink every day or binge drink. See your pcp for some tests of liver & pancreatic function as well as having your spleen checked out.

No: and am not sure how you know your spleen is enlarged.  If you had some kind of scan or ultrasound, you need to be asking the doctor who ordered that test. The spleen does not enlarge in alcohol-related disease until the liver is very very sick (cirrhosis). Many things can cause splenic enlargement, and only your physician can figure it out with full history, examination and appropriate tests.

Alcohol: Effects depend on the amount consumed. Small to moderate consumption causes reduced risks of blood clots , stone formation , diabetes & rheumatoid arthritis.  Large consumption causes impaired memory & vision, anemia, cardiomyopathy, hepatitis, cancer mouth/esophagus, gastritis, pancreatitis, diabetes type 2, depression, anxiety, psychosis, insomnia, panic, cravings.

Don't understand ?: Alcohol is metabolized into acetaldehyde and then into acetic acid, which is then used by the body, in the Krebs cycle, to produce energy.  There is no "acid" that accumulates and needs to be removed. In patients who drink extremely large amounts of alcohol, other byproducts, such as acetone and dihydroxybutyric acid DO cause alcoholic ketoacidosis, which resolves with thiamine and fluids.

Yes: Chronic alcohol ingestion can induce production of hepatic microsomal enzymes.  Depending on the amount, frequency and length of your alcohol intake, there may be hepatic injury, cirrhosis bleeding diasthesis, and withdrawal symptoms, such as delirium tremens.

Moderation: Depends on how much and how often. Benefits to cutting down on alcohol intake are less potential damage to liver with resultant cirrhosis and cardiac damage resulting in cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

Accepted Answer

It depends: Occasionally there is irreversible damage to organs as a result of chronic alcohol use.  We generally consider the brain to be pretty well back to baseline after 6 months or so and after being abstinent for 12 months one is formally into remission.   If not scarred the liver will get back to normal I suspect within a month or so.    Talk to a physician about the details of your exam and hx.

does magnesium level in the body fluctuate all throughout the day? my magnesium was one point under the low end of the range due to drinking alcohol and poor diet. can eating the right foods get it back in normal range?

Accepted Answer

: Magnesium fluxes in and out of cells and bones and may have to have better evaluation to determine if total body amount is okay, rather than depending on the value in the blood alone. Eating right and eating food with high magnesium content should help and there is also the option of taking tablets for quick corrrection when it is very low. Alcohol is empty calories that is bad for brain and liver
