30/f endometriosis and ovarian cysts had left ovary and tube removed. had fluid drained off pelvis 6 months later. now i'm in horrible pain.

You suffering sole: 30&#x27;s female with endometriosis is one of a multitude of suffering persons. Doctors do not know cause. Unfortunately operative procedures of the pelvic cavity tissues can arouse adhesions. I have often wondered at incidence of bowel obstruction ; irritable bowel syndrome as function of serial operative procedures many endometriosis patients undergo.

Pain may not b ovary: There was no size of the cyst noted but cysts on the ovary can be simple, normal, small cysts and usually do not cause pain. Further work-up would be advised.  There are other causes of pelvic pain including urinary and bowel problems.  Also, cysts that are drained often return.  You should be seen again for further evaluation.

how do they drain an 4cm ovarian cyst? do they cut ? how long is the recovery time?

If it is: thought to be a so-called functional cyst they may wait several cycles to see if it resolves on its own.  Otherwise, if it is presumptively benign, a laparoscopic removal(cystectomy) would be performed.  If it is more suspicious, open surgery may be indicated.  The cysts are not drained, they are removed.

Yes: When a patient has the cyst drained, it means that the fluid is removed but the lining of the cyst reains.  There is a chance the cyst will fill with fluid again.  When the entire cyat is removed, including the lining, there is little chance it will return.

during both cysts i have put on a horrendous amount of weight but eating?

Recurrent cysts: Your gyn will talk with you about cyst suppression with oral contraceptives. You are young and you can take off the weight by 1200-1400 calories daily and exercise. The  patient education site www.patientedu.org has great info on diet.

Ovarian cyst: If your cyst was drained, it involved surgery and will tala a little time to heal. This presumes that the cyst if the cause of your pain.

Could be: Usually a dermoid ovarian cyst is not drained but removed from the ovary as it is likely to continue to grow.  There could always be an infection but that is unusual.  You should be seen by your physician.

Depends what it is: If it is a functional cyst it likely will not come back although it could, if it is not functional  (endometrioma, inclusion cyst, benign tumor etc....) they will recur about 85%-100% of the time. It's important to have at least a very good guess what it "is" before draining.

i have an 8cm ovarian cyst and pregnant, my doctor said he will drain it vaganily as i won't need any pain killers or anaesthetic, is this safe?

Ovarian cyst: Ovarian cysts are very common in early pregnancy and throughout the first trimester.  If you are in the first trimester, avoid any intervention as the cyst will probably resolve on its own.  If your doctor is worried about a malignancy then needle drainage should be avoided at all costs.
