50 mg is max: 50mg is the max recommended dose for insomnia using doxylamine.  I would recommend consulting your physician for an exam - possibly even a psychiatrist or sleep specialist to determine why you haven't been able to sleep!

Caution Required: Both drugs have similar "mechanisms of action." therefore, the effects they produce are "additive" and, in theory, can pile up to create more effects than would be predicted if each drug were taken by itself...Almost as if 1+1=3! both drugs produce sedation and have anti-histamine properties. So, excessive sleepiness or agitation can happen. Be cautious..Speak to your provider or pharmacist!

No, except: Doxylamine is rarely used nowadays and it does have some drowsiness effect as with all first-generation antihistamines.  Since Cetirizine also causes drowsiness in roughly 10% of the people, you are more likely to get drowsy from taking both of these medications. Otherwise I do not expect any significant problem with side effects.

Have somebody take you to the emergency room to get your stomach pumped. Anticholinergic side effects can include, racing hert, pounding chest, hallucinations, seizures, dry mouth, thickened secretions.

For what?: Doxylamine (unisom) is an anti-histamine which causes sedation.  Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic.  I'd guess the question i'd ask is why do you need either?  Perhaps get a referral to a sleep specialist so he/she can get a good history and perhaps find a solution as to why you feel you need any medication at all to help with sleep.  Perhaps neither med is the right solution for you.

Doxylamine: Doxylamine succinate trouble of the active ingredient in Unisom, is a non-habit-forming antihistamine that promotes sleep. As long as you tolerate it well, it should not hurt you to take a half a tab of that each evening, but it would be better if you could figure out a way not to take it every night. Good luck.
