For what?: Doxylamine (unisom) is an anti-histamine which causes sedation. Ambien (zolpidem) is a sedative-hypnotic. I'd guess the question i'd ask is why do you need either? Perhaps get a referral to a sleep specialist so he/she can get a good history and perhaps find a solution as to why you feel you need any medication at all to help with sleep. Perhaps neither med is the right solution for you.

Ambien (zolpidem): Follow your doctor's advise regarding sleep medicines. Also, ask about sleep hygiene.
