Doxylamine allergy: Doxylamine is an antihistamine medication that is used in the treatment of   hay fever /allergy symptoms. Allergic reactions can include difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of face, lips, throat, mouth or tongue.

are there any non-sedative antihistamines that work like doxylamine? it is the only drug that helps my allergies. claritin/lortadine do not help.

Other choices: There are several other antihistamines that are options.   These include Cetirizine (zyrtec),  levo-cetirizine (xyzal) fexofenadine (allergra), and des-loratadine (clarinex).  It's not clear why some antihistamines seem to work better for some people than others, but these are worth a try.  Also, there is a nasal spray antihistamines including Astepro which works really well for some people.

No: Doxylamine and Diphenhydramine are two different antihistamines, with sedating effects.

could doxylamine succinate (equate sleep aid) create a false positive on a hair drug screen?

Accepted Answer

No: there are virtually no false positives in hair testing, since it is done with GC/MS or other comparable sophisticated confirmatory tests.  Doxylamine can cause false positives tests for Methadone and PCP on screening tests, but NOT on the confirmatory tests.

i am allergic to ondansetron, other anti nausea drugs don't help, would doxylamine and b6 help with nausea with migraine?

More options:: A simple way to v nausea is w ginger. You can drink slightly flattened ginger ale or nibble on crystallized ginger.  Or pour boiling water over freshly sliced organic ginger ; steep at least 5 min in a covered pot. Sip.  Aromatherapy: sweet orange (citrus sinensis), peitigrain (citrus reticulata), mandarin (citrus reticulata) are different citrus scents that can v nausea.   Need to abort migraine.

i have heart failure & insomnia - for years. i tried diphenhydramine and doxylamine, but they are anticholinergic drugs. not for my age, 70. thought ibruprofen was it, but not with my heart prob. am adding supplements. what is inositol? any other?

Insomnia: Inositol is a vitamin like supplement,  is part of the B family. It has been described as nature's sleeping pill by some. Since the FDA doesn't investigate supplements, most physicians are reluctant to recommend them. Some have contaminants or interact with medications. Your pharmacist may have more information about this supplement and whether it's safe.. My patients did ok with low dose benadryl

: Sleep hygiene remains best in the long run, including balanced activities during the day with at least some physical activity, ideally outdoors, no tv or computer before bed time, light dinner hours before bed time, avoiding or reducing coffee and alcohol are only few suggested changes. Nights mirror our days and they are not all meant to be the same.

Doxylamine: Doxylamine succinate trouble of the active ingredient in Unisom, is a non-habit-forming antihistamine that promotes sleep. As long as you tolerate it well, it should not hurt you to take a half a tab of that each evening, but it would be better if you could figure out a way not to take it every night. Good luck.

Do you need to?: That's a better question, and the follow up is why do you need it? The drug itself is similar to Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with similar side effects. It's never wise to take sleeping aids for long term without looking for an underlying cause for the sleep problem. I would suggest yo speak to your doctor about your sleep problems and see if you can find out what's causing you to not sleep well in the first place.
