what happens when shingles blisters pop?

They'll crust over: If the shingles area is  kept clean, then the the popped blisters will crust over,  and the itching, burning sensation will slowly diminish, especially if  an antiviral agent such as valacyclovir is used early in therapy.

See a dermatologist: "Shingles", herpes zoster, is primarily painful, not itchy. The vesicles are small and become pussy after a day or 2, then scabs in another day or 2. You probably have something else and should go get diagnosed.

Prob not shingles: Your doctor probably is correct that this isn't shingles. "Hands and arms" (plural) suggests this rash is on both sides of your body, which doesn't happen with shingles. Continue working with your doctor; or see a dermatologist.

Skin damage: It is likely the infection has cleared with the anti-virals, but the damage to the skin can take months to heal. It's not unlike a burn - the skin has to regenerate and create new skin cells, and these areas can be extra sensitive for weeks to months. Think of it in terms of a broken bone - often takes 6-8 weeks to make that new bone after a fracture. Same for skin to heal.

Shingles treatment: Assuming the diagnosis is correct, you should be on treatment, e.g. valacyclovir, which will speed healing. Even mild cases normally should be treated; a mild start can still go on to a fairly severe or prolonged course. With treatment, it should stop getting worse in a day or two and begin improving a couple days later. If not on treatment, contact your doctor ASAP. Good luck!

Shingles: Shingles-reactivation of chickenpox infection w/vzv virus. After chickenpox rash goes away, virus hides in nerve cells & is kept there by your immune system. At times of stress or health conditions that decrease immune system function, virus comes out along a path of 1 nerve as red patches & blisters. Blisters last about 1 wk, pain can last much longer. There are tx to help prevent or reduce pain.

Yes: Untreated shingles will evolve over about 4 to 5 weeks. Clusters of vessicles [small blisters] will appear for a couple of weeks, evolving through pustules, hemmorhagic spots, then scabs, leaving a band of pale scar. It will heal faster if specific oral therapy is started on first or second day and continued for 1 week.
