Firstly, : Firstly, there is no reason to be scared if you have a cavity... You are not falling apart.

Forget about diagnosing this by yourself with a needle. You are correct: it is either a stain, or a cavity. A dentist, examining your tooth physically, can tell you for sure.

Staining is caused by bacteria that gets caught in the pits and fissures of your teeth, or from the actual coloring of the food you eat.

Make an appointment, get an exam for all of your teeth, and make sure that you don't have any other problems that you cannot see.

More info needed...: Your problem is not due to your dental caries. Do you drink eight glasses of water a day? High salt diet? Medications? How much alcohol a day? Any other medical conditions? You really need to be seen by a local physician for your dry mouth and your dentist for your cavities. Dry mouth will only exacerbate your dental problems.

Sugar is not just candy, milk, fruit juice etc.  Your real question is how can i stop cavities and the answer is keep them clean,  keep the bacteria that can cause acids off and try to maintain a good diet and quit snacks and beverages between meals.  Floss is the only way you can clean between the tee.

Several factors: Cavities are caused by bacteria that produce acids and this will decay the tooth.   Diet low in sugar and acid  is important to decrease the growth of cariogenic bacteria. Brushing  at least twice a day and flossing once a day will remove  the plaque that feed the bacteria.  Fluoride will strengthen teeth. Some medication cause dry mouth which will increase cavities. Xylitol also fights decay.
