can a pseudophedrine overdose cause heart damage?  over dose was 120 - 30mg tabs of sudafed.

Get help: Pseudoephedrine can cause blood vessel contraction or spasm, but probably will not cause significant heart damage. Far more concerning to me is the purposeful overdose. If you are depressed, suicidal, or have any thoughts about hurting yourself, you need to get help immediately. Whatever the problem, you can get help and it will get better!

Yes: Decongestants can cause irregular heart rates.

Stimulant: Sudafed can stimulate the heart rhythm and elevate the blood pressure and is not recommended for patients with cardiovascular disorders even on beta blocker therapy.

can i take gaviscon & sudafed together, as i have really bad heart burn. ?

Reflux: You can certainly take gaviscon and sudafed together, but if you are trying to treat heartburn there are other alternatives that should do better for you. First sudafed works well for nasal congestion and is not likely to give you much improvement in heat burn. Good heart burn medications include: Zantac, Tagamet, Prilosec and Nexium (esomeprazole).  You could also try TUMS, mylanta or other antacids.

will coricidin hbp work like sudafed if you are looking to open your sinuses?  will it increase heart rate?

Coricidin hbp: This formulation lacks the catecholamine vasoconstrictor that is found in sudafed. It is this agent which 'decongests' the sinuses. Coricidin hbp will help with the histamine reaction if the sinus congestion relates to that but won't be the same as sudafed and it shouldn't increae heart rate.

i've been taking sudafed 120mg bid for 9 months because of chronic sinus infections. can taking it for that long do anything bad? is it bad for heart?

Yes: I would recommend that you see an ENT specialist and get a good evaluation and treatment for your chronic sinusitis -- and longterm use of high dose sudafed can cause cardiac arrhythmia.

can i take sudafed pe pressure and pain if i take atenolol 25mg for fast heart rate? i have a sinus headache and pressure..

Arrhythmia: Would discuss this with the doctor who is treating your fast heart rate since this can be due to several different conditions. Try using saline nasal irrigation of sinuses with a Neti-pot (see your friendly pharmacist), Afrin nasal spray (no longer than 3 days) and possibly a nasal steroid spray. Stay away from pseudoephedrine until speaking with your doctor.

my heart was pounding, but i felt extreme drowsyness...i couldnt stop moving and part of my body, my skin was getting purple /red marks? but they go away ...?

Side effects: Sudafed can rarely cause skipped or extra heart beats and more commonly elevates blood pressure if used consistently.  It also causes restlessness.   Drowsiness is expected effect of Benadryl (diphenhydramine).  Unsure about the skin color changes, probably unrelated.

i took sudafed and bp went to 217/117 from normal, had heart pain, headache, blood urine, ringingears, visual spots, would brain damage be permanent?

Probably not, but...: That is  dangerously high bp! if it remained like that for more than 10-15 minutes, given those symptoms a trip to the er is in order!

will afrin (oxymetazoline) nose spray work as well as sudafed po with less risk of increased heart rate for opening up my sinuses and eustachian tubes?

Afrin (oxymetazoline): Is useful but you can only use for 3 days, otherwise you will develop rebound congestion. You can also try using a sinus rinse with a netti pot  or ask your doctor about a cortisone nasal spray. Take care!
