Puzzling question: A scalp hematoma means there is a collection of blood under the skin of the scalp. This usually reflects a broken blood vessel from trauma. It usually hurts, can persist for days or weeks, but has little if any importance. It is not by itself any sort of brain injury. It is not inside the skull.

had a recent fall my ct results: normal noncontrast ct the brain. high left parietal scalp hematoma. its been 5days and i am okay in am but in the evening it starts to hurt and i get tired is this normal? or should i go get another ct?

: Trauma enough to create a scalp hematoma can give rise to migraine equivalent headaches a week or more after the event. By itself, hurting and getting tired are not reasons for a new study. I would confer with your doc who can decide if you need to come in for an exam. An exam could detect any abnormality that would require further imaging studies.

Sounds like a : Bad head injury. The hematoma is bleeding in the scalp tissue. The underlying brain tissue is also "bruised".  Was there trauma, or is the patient on blood thinners?

Possible: Subdural hematomas can sometimes rebleed. If the new episode of bleeding is large enough it can cause pressure on the brain and new symptoms.

can untreated subdural hematoma cause brain damage? if so would it be immediate or months or years?

Accepted Answer

Subdural hematoma: It is size dependent  if untreated. I suspect your  doctor felt small. Damage caused by pressure on brain..Symptoms usually within 48 hrs  altho case from chicago childrens caused symptoms over a week later. Symptoms can be as as mild as headace altho rare or difiiculty using opposite side of body or signs of increased brain pressure such as lethargy and vomiting.

i sustained a head injury one week ago today. bleeds excluded by cat scan. moderate scalp hematoma. still pretty swollen and some pain. i have worked serving and tending bar with moderate fatigue. would it be safe at this point to have sex?

: Your CT scan ruled out intracranial bleeding. As long as you're not experiencing headaches or other neurological symptoms you shouldn't have to abstain from having sex or other strenuous activities. Be careful to aggravate the scalp hematoma.

Yes, it can: Hematoma is a collection of blood in tissues.  This blood can track down under the force of gravity or pressure to the anatomic structures below, such as the face.  You want to make sure that the bruising on the face is not due to trauma to other structures. For example, raccoon eyes, bruising around the eyes, can be a sign of a basal skull fracture.  Please have this evaluated as soon as possible.

why is seroquel (quetiapine) being used after my mom's tbi? she has a hematoma moving her brain off center. her cognition seems worse.  3 weeks in hospital.

See answer: Ask your mother's doctor without delay what is the reason for Seroquel (quetiapine) and communicate your concern that her cognitive state seems worse. Ask about rationale for this med, withdrawing dose if any side effects or another strategy. Also let nursing staff know you're worried about your mom and need to speak to her doctor. Do speak up. I hope this helps you and your mom.

fell & hurt my head. swelled bad,i looked unrecognizable. had a ct show just frontal scalp hematoma.i have numbness, 1 side body weak, forgetting etc. 1 year later mri showed white matter/t2/flair(vasculitis) i'm 27. could this be caused by the fall?

: A Neurology consult and additional lab and possibly CSF analysis may be helpful. Vasculitis may be caused by a number of conditions. Do you have renal or cardiac conditions? A history of COVID 19 infection may contribute to your symptoms.
