i've heard that one of the side effects of thyroid meds is ovarian cancer, as well as breast cancer and on the minor scale, hair loss. is this true?

Accepted Answer

No: I assume you mean synthroid/levothyroxin for thyroid replacement therapy.  This is just a synthetic thyroid hormone for those who cannot make it in their own thyroid.  This does not cause cancer.  Typically a low functioning thyroid will cause hair loss, not therapy.

can ovarian cancer be caused by enviornmental factors like chemicals?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: We do not know the precise answer to this question.  However, it is reasonable to suspect that there may be a relationship in some cases at least.  For instance, we know that women who have tubal sterilization for birth control are at decreased risk of developing ovarina cancer.  It is thought that this may be due to blocking of environmental chemicals from reaching the ovary through the tube.

does tamoxifen use cause ovarian cancer?

Accepted Answer

No: Tamoxifen can increase a women's risk for endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterus).  It does not increase the risk for ovarian cancer.

can ovarian cancer cause my urine to be bloody?

Accepted Answer

Should not: Ovarian cancer does not cause blood in the urine. However, if the ovarian cancer is locally advancing into the bladder, then blood may be seen in the urine visible to the eye or detected by a urinalysis.

Accepted Answer

Menses (periods): Are caused by pitutary driving ovaries to produce estrogen, and then develop eggs to burst from ovary for fertilization.  Uterine lining builds with estrogen stimulation, when estrogen stops, the linig shed.  This does not necessarily change with an ovarian cancer on either side.

Unlikely: Hemorrhage occurs routinely in the cyst formed at ovulation. While a hemorrhagic cyst can be the result of a cancer, hemorrhagic cyst, per se, does not cause cancer.

can arimidex (anastrozole) cause ovarian cancer

Accepted Answer

Highly unlikely: Although Arimidex (anastrozole) can cause many side effects, it is not known to significantly increase risk or cause ovarian cancer. It is a relative new medicine and so this may change in the future when more data becomes available (more patients treated with it and their outcomes).
Obviously you need to weight the risks/benefits when taking any medication, especially chemotherapy agents.

No: There is absolutely no known relationship between the two issues. The lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is very small and there may be genetic reasons but no risk from the procedure.

Accepted Answer

Ovarian cancer: Yes it can, but in early cases symptoms such as bloating or pain may be also absent. Body imaging such as ultrasound or CT scans may help detect it. Elevated tumor markers (Ca 125 usually) can heighten one's suspicions.

Briefly: Unfortunately in advanced cases, masses or fluid can put pressure on the abdominal & pelvic cavity and also exert pressure on the stomach causing bloating, early satiety & reflux type symptoms. Rarely cancer can affect the stomach & ovaries at the same time.
