Risk versus benefit: We use zyprexa (olanzapine) in pregnancy, when the risks outweigh the benefits.  It is a category c medication, which is what many medications that we use in pregnancy are.  There are no known negative fetal effects but the data is limited.  Often when patients need psychiatric medications outside of pregnancy, it is important to continue them in pregnancy, as it is a time that otherwise many deteriorate.

Slow taper over a: period of 6-8 weeks is good observing for any return of symptoms for which the olanzapine was prescribed.  Withdraw under the supervision of your prescriber.  Some may experience nausea or diarrhea  during withdrawal, most do not. If uncertain consult your prescriber who will assist in determining management. Best regards for good health.

Alternative medicine: At your height of 74", 190 pounds does not seem to me to be an extremely excessive amount of weight gain; but in any case, weight gain associated with zyprexa will probably not improve until the zyprexa is stopped regardless of reasonable dietary restrictions. Alternative medications to discuss with your doctor that would be less likely to cause weight gain are Abilify and geodon (ziprasidone).

Maybe (not) . . .: 1st good news: I found no interaction (http://goo.gl/5p2RX1) btwn Zyprexa (olanzapine) &amp; Cipramil (Australian brand of citalopram). Ironically, www.epocrates.com noted somnolence as side effect of antipsychotic Zyprexa while www.drugs.com described opposite side effect. However, given all the side effects linked to Zyprexa, I would not use for insomnia. Although it would be useful in mania.

Zyprexa (olanzapine) clears slowly and requires slow taper to prevent withdrawal symptoms and need to observe for target symptom return.
