: Lesions due to MS, involving  the brain and/or spinal cord, are always present on MRI films utilizing appropriate software technology.  There is a  rare entity of benign MS (not "mild"), indicating a presentation with a spontaneous remission and no further progression.

Complex : The newer MS lesions will persist on an MRI for about 4 weeks (T-1, GAD positive).  But are you being treated with a potent disease modifying therapy like Tysabri (natalizumab) or Gilenya?  If you have had a true relapse, are you taking steroids or ACTH?  Do you supplement vitamin D-3?  Hope you have an experienced and knowledgable neurologist.

It could show signs: It is possible that an MRI performed 1 week after your symptoms started would show signs of plaques from Multiple Sclerosis. If the MRI was done without intravenous contrast (dye injected into your vein) some plaques might not be visible on the MRI.

i asked earlier about ms and white matter disease. i have had an mri  (2) actually. shows lesions. "stroke" in october. but wad told not a stroke?

MRI WHITE  LESIONS: Mri's are very sensitive at identifying any change in anatomy. Some lesions can look like the beginning of ms, but not actually turn into the disease. High blood pressure and trauma can cause lesions they look like ms or small strokes. Serial examinations are sometimes required to figure out if the findings improve, stay the same, or increase.

They can: Between MS flares, new brain lesions may develop. However, depending on various factors including location, they may not cause symptoms. These are called subclinical lesions. See below: A spinal tap is a reasonable course of action to take.  If it comes normal, odds are very slim that you have ms.

Not MS: There are a variety of normal variants/benign cystic structures in the brain.  Please discuss your diagnosis with your doc (neurologist). 

Please make sure your MRI was performed on a scanner accredited by the american college of radiology, performed by registered technologists and interpreted by a qualified, board certified radiologist (a doctor with 5-6 years of training after medical school!).

i have all the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, but it didn't show up on the mri, could i still have ms? what else could it be? i'm negative for lupus

MS: Another exam which you didn't mention is a spinal tap looking for "oligoclonal bands." if this hasn't been done, it would be the next logical step even without MRI findings.

Can be seen: The MS plaques can be seen with or without a flare up. Active plaques may be seen with contrast.
