Bone loss: Braces are usually used in young people who are growing and their should never be bone loss in that age group.  If that is the case, then further investigation re nutritional deficiencies and genetic diseases causing loss of phosphorus, calcium or vitamin d are in order.

Lots of questions: Hard to answer any of them without examining your teeth. Together with radiographs, your local dentist can diagnose any problems you may have and advise you of the proper treatment.

As : As with any medical or dental problem, it is almost impossible to determine the cost of treatment without a proper assessment of the problem.  For your problem the initial assessment will typically include a clinical examination with full charting of the condition of the gum and bone as well as xrays.  I recommend that you call several periodontists that your dentist recommends in your area and ask if they can provide you an estimate for those services.

Most Likely: More than likely you would still be able to get braces even with those issues.  There are quite a few variables and the wisdom teeth may need to be removed prior to orthodontic treatment, but don't let that scare you off.  My best advice would be to call a local orthodontist and schedule a consultation appointment where they can give you more specific information based on your case.

One way street..: In general, bone that is lost through periodontal disease, bruxism, and aging cannot be reversed. It is gone forever. If you have certain periodontal defects, or need grafting for implant placement, there are procedures to help you. Speak to a local periodontist if you have bone loss to discuss your options.

Depends on the issue: There are often multiple ways to address specific dental concerns.The philosophy of the dentist coupled with the goals of the patient may lead in many treatment directions. My thinking is that if there is an orthodontic malocclusion, the best solution involves treating the problem orthodontically but that often isn't the only possible approach. Get a clear understanding of all options b4 treatment.

Recession?: What you describe sounds like gum recession which often results from brushing too hard.  Most of the bone loss I see is tied to 6mm pockets or more; 3mm is "normal."  Your specific case could be an exception, and your question can be best answered in person, and would only take a minute at your next exam.
