Toothpaste: If the paste is approved and has fluoride, in my opinion they are all fine. It is the proper brushing and flossing that matters. The added perks of some like, whitening (does very little), baking soda, peroxide, enamel building are all fine but dont add a lot. Brush for 2mins, floss and use a  rinse if you like, that should do most of the trick.

Discuss with Dentist: First, you need to confirm that it is the crest pro health mouth wash that is causing the sloughing and not something else.  Alcohol is known to increase the risk of oral cancer, so anything that you put in your mouth that contains alcohol may increase the risk. I don't believe that that one contains alcohol.  You should discuss these issues with your own dentist.

Try : Try crest or colgate whitening. Also, get listerine whitening. The use of these 2 products should help, but, the best is always start with a profession teeth cleaning to start with a clean slate. It is much easier to keep it off than to remove it.
Do you drink a lot of coffee/tea? If so, try using a straw. This prevents the dark liquids from touching your front teeth.

Long time stains?: Did your son's teeth come in that way or did they just appear?  They could be areas of "hypo calcification, " meaning not enough calcium in his diet.  Is he drinking milk?  Did your or his father's teeth at this age look like this?  Could also be genetic.  It is time for your son to go to the dentist for a routine checkup to make sure all is well and his teeth are coming in right.

They are not designed to be used as toothpaste.
Why reinvent the wheel?  There are so many toothpaste to choose from.   Look for an american dental association approved toothpaste and you will not go wrong.
Established companies such as crest, and colgate spend enormous amount of time and money on research.  
They have a lot to lose is their toothpaste does not do the job.
It is far more important to worry about proper brushing technique.
