Number of factors: Macular degeneration (amd) is primarily an age-related disease (age 50+), but there are genetic and environmental factors that contribute to age of onset and severity. Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (stroke, heart attack) are also risk factors for amd. Smoking is the top modifiable risk factor. Of course, there is a lot we still don't understand about amd.

God knows: A lot of research being done now. Seems to be a problem with metabolizing the rods and cones which leads to drusen, which affects the barrier to the vascular layer. Many theories out there.

Macular degeneration: Is when the layer of cells of the back of the retina do not function well, leaving deposits called drusen mostly in the central vision area, the macula. This is caused by the age ing process, things that can damage the retina cells, ie uv light, and can be related to nutritional deficiencies.  This entity is called age related macular degeneration( amd). Risk factors include old age, family histor.

A disease: Macular degeneration is a degenerative disease that affects the rods and cones (photoreceptors) in the retina.  The degeneration and death of these is multifactorial.  Changes in nutrition, blood flow, heredity, ultraviolet exposure all increase your risks for the disease.  Best defense:  UV protection, good diet high in green leafy vegetables, multivitamin with lutein-- and don't get a day older.

can dry macular degeneration turn into the wet form? i've read that it sometimes happens, but it doesn't make sense to me. don't the two forms of macular degeneration have different causes?

Dry : Dry macular degeneration can become wet when abnormal blood vessels start to form in the same area. Since these blood vessels do not behave normally like other blood vessels, they can leak fluids or red blood cells in surrounding tissue, hence the name "wet" macular degeneration can form.

Retinal breakdown: Scarring the in the maculae can occur in both the wet and dry forms of macular degeneration.  Usually, it is problematic in the wet form when there is leakage of serum or blood from new blood vessels that cause inflammation and retinal scarring - here the prognosis is guarded.  In advanced forms of dry macular degeneration there can be scarring as well.

No: Trauma can cause retinal macular trauma such as choroidal rupture, hemorrhage and detachment.  Macular degeneration in the traditional sense is caused by aging.

Not usually: Macular degeneration in its advanced state can cause blurring of vision.  If the blur is isolated to only one eye, a loss of depth perception could theoretically cause a dizzy sensation.
