i'm getting the mesh removed , had a umbilical hernia repair, but the doctor says it won't be a big opening and he will leave it opne n it will close by it self. why can't he just stich it. opening wound worries me alot?

Cleaner: Often it is better to have a wound heal from the bottom up rather than chance trapping an infection by closing the wound. Discuss concerns with your physician they should be able to educate and reassure you!!

Unknown: Unexlained swelling of lips and face suggests an allergic reaction, and should be seen right away by your pediatrician or an emergency room. Whether or not it has anything to do with the hernia repair would depend on when it was done. There are no known true allergies to synthetic mesh products, as they do not invoke an immune response. They can have problems though, so call the surgeon as well.

If you do a lot of liftinig, bending and stooping and straining your time for recovery may be longer (~2-4 weeks).  If you have a less strenuous vocation, then perhaps less than a week to up to 2 weeks.  It will depend on your size, condition, health and complications and your doctor's opinion.
