Very Safe: The procedure should not cause you any health problems, Many general dentist perform root canal therapy,  but if you feel more comfortable seeing a specialist, seek the care of an endodontist.

Accepted Answer

Yes: If there is leakage around the filling in a tooth with a root canal, you can get bacterial contamination in the root which may cause reinfection and may require retreatment of the root canal.

Is this ?Or answer: If you are drinking alcohol after root canal treatment and are taking any pain meds you should NOT be drinking alcohol because it may accentuate the effects of the pain pills. 
If dr had to drain or treat any bubble you may have had on the side of your gums it could sting.
So there is usually no pain or problem to the tooth itself from having a drink

i've been having severe pain "episodes" (they lasts 10-20minutes) on the left side of my face. it often leaves my left side of my face numb and stiff. i've been to the dentist - no root canal problems. it's very debilitating. what can be the cause?

Facial Pain: It certainly does not sound like a root canal problem. There can be a number off different causes, including bruxism, TMJ disorder, or even a neurological issue. You should probably begin with an ENT physician for a complete medical history and exam.

Yes uncommon: Sometimes the root apices of maxillary molars can intrude into the maxillary sinus cavity & an infection can cause schneiderian membrane thickening &  fluid accumulation & infection within the sinus.  This usually resolves after rct therapy & resolution of  infection.  Sometimes, residual infection can remain, especially if the rct was inadequate.  Extrusion of gutta percha & sealer can irritate.

Training: A General Dentist has 4-5 years of training.  An Endodontists has an additional 2-3 years of specialty residency.  Seek quality, not bargain, care.

Healing: Especially if cavity was deep, may take considerable time to become comfortable.  Cold sensitivity better than hot.  Discuss this w your Dentist who knows you better than we do.  Root canal treatment is an option, but may not be necessary.  Give it time.

Dentist can re-check: A person who started a root canal but did not finish, may or may not have a temporary crown on the tooth. The tooth may be more likely to crack or break if it is not properly crowned. It may be more likely to get decay if it is not protected and sealed off from the bacteria and food substances. It is best to check with a dentist to get the tooth well-protected.
