Prevention: A few minutes of stretching exercises or riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before going to bed can prevent the cramps from coming on.  Keeping well hydrated and avoiding alcohol/caffeine help.  Cramps can be a sign of low potassium and magnesium, which are a side effect of some medications such as diuretics.  If you get cramps regularly, it is worthwhile getting checked out.

what crystals cause gout? is there a particular food or drink i can avoid, to avoid eating or drinking whatever makes the crystals?

Uric Acid: Hard liquors, beers, shellfish and seafood, high protein items, such as meats, legumes such as beans and peas, some cheeses all should be limited or avoided.  Many websites list comprehensive gout diets.  Cherry juice reduces gout flares.

Knee pain: Chronic knee pain under the knee cap may have many causes.  Acute gout attack can be easily treated with oral medications, diet and fluid hydration.  If your symptom is caused by increasing use of your knee, you may have the common patellofemoral pain syndrome or runner's knee.  Talk to your doc to get the definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Yes: Physical stress to inflammed joints will increase the inflammation, especially with gout. I was one of the authors of a scientific paper which actually confirmed this point.

Treatment of Gout: There are 2 types of treatment for gout.  One type of treatment are medications(e.G . Colchicine) decreased the symptoms of inflammation such as pain and swelling.  Another type of treatment are medications(e.g. Febuxostat)  that decrease the uric acid levels.   If pain and swelling is persistent with colchicine, you may need short course of oral steroids.  Discuss this with your doctor.

: Time to see a gout specialist or a rheumatologist in the outpatient setting, there are many newer treatments and preventive measures that should be discussed and used. Most importantly gout should be questioned also as many times such arthropaties are misdiagnosed as gout.

Why avoid the pills?: They are relatively safe and likely one of the more effective treatments. The other option is changing diet. I often find this to be inadequate in my patient population.

First : First of all, you need to go and see a podiatrist (foot and ankle specialist). They will need to take an x-ray of your foot to find out the extent of the damage that gouty arthritis has done to your foot.

After that, you will probably be given a steroid injection into your left big toe joint. That will reduce the inflammation and pain in your foot. You will then be given some oral anti-inflammatory medications such as Colchicine and Indomethacin to try and reduce the swelling and pain even more.

Long term, they'll take some blood from you to look at your uric acid level. If it is elevated, and your diet isn't doing the trick, you might need to be placed on a long-term gout medication such as uloric.

You are only 25 years old and you shouldn't really be getting these gouty attacks. If you control the amount of red meat, poultry and alcoholic beverages in your diet, you will reduce the chances of getting a gouty attack.
