Noninvasive measures: I assume you are getting epidural steroid injections for back or neck pain. Your best bets would be a combination of biofeedback for control of nerve pain and muscle spasms, and pilates for strengthening of the spinal muscles. Additionally, aquatic therapy would be a more soothing form of back strengthening. Try to minimize medications.

1-2 days: Usually, if a cortisone shot is going to work it usually takes about 1-2 days.  If it did not work in your case you may want to contact your doctor to discuss other treatment options.

Neck pain: Cortisone shots are a mainstay for the treatment of neck pain. Whiplash injury is an outdated term and really doesn't describe the type of problem that you are suffering from. See a neurosurgeon to help explain the problem and to develop a focused treatment plan to reduce or eliminate the pain.

NoLong-TermProblems: First, the term"cortisone"could mean exactly that or, more likely,another form of it,probably more potent.So it depends on that but also, what's called the "clinical benefit"to you,not just the supposed"half life."I know a few people in whom it"helped"for several months. But who knows, there's lots of variables.But if you want a simple answer,a steroid injection into a joint"should" last 4-8 weeks

Depends on how long: Soreness after a cortisone injection is normal for first 24-48hrs after injection but if lasting longer the injection may not have worked. If it has worked then yes, you may be able to walk longer with less pain.

Depends what kind...: The most common type is osteoarthritis.  The most common treatment is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (ibuprofen, etc).  Cortisone injections are sometimes helpful for months, but only if there is inflammation.  If there is chronic joint damage, the injections may be minimally effective as you have described.  Rheumatoid arthritis or others may benefit from special medications.

Similar, minor diffe: The long term side effects are numerous depending on the individuals, duration, and dose.  Major ones: Osteoporosis, cataract, diabetes, hypertension, adrenal suppression (stop working altogether) . Some may have glaucoma. Weight gain at the belly and face, acne etc. Some immune suppression can be expect with high doses for months.
Prednisone has less sodium-retention effects (less low potassium)

last year in july after having xrays of both knees that showed bone on bone,i had the first cortisone shot in my left knee and the third shot in my right knee.orthopedic surgeon  recommends both knees be replaced asap.since i have much unfinished work to do before risking the possibility of a longer than usual recovery.i am doing strengthening exercises and ride bicycle,just rode thirty miles.what else can i do

Severe knee arthrit : Strengthening the supporting muscles is very important along with getting down to your best weight possible. Certainly a BMI below 30 and maybe more like 25. When to exercise swimming, biking. Very low impact exercise. Glucosamine can be used but with severe arthritis it may be minimal. Gel injections can help some before replacement.

Depends on multiple : Factors. Ex. Where it is being injected; some areas of the body are more responsive to cortisone than others. It depends on reason 4 injection. For inflammatory or degenerative joint pathologies, depends on how bad the degeneration/inflammation is, how bad the pressure on the nerve is, what your "genetics" is with susceptibility to inflammation, how much daily stress the body area is subjected to.
