what medications are recommended for  diverticulitis and intestinal spasms?

2 problems: Acute diverticulitis is commonly treated with antibiotic such as Flagyl and clindamycin, effective against anaerobic (lack of oxygen areas) bacteria. See prior answer for more details.  Intestinal spasm can be a part of diverticulitis, but is really a problem unto itself.  There is only one cause of pain in the lower GI tract: abd wall muscle spasm. This is underlying ibs, colon masses/obstruction.

on lansoprazole for a year 15mg a day for diverticulitis and for risk bleeding on plavix i see lansoprazole can decrease my magnesium.so on my medication ,especially ramipril can i take magnesium supplements as there is moderate risk of hyperkalemia?

You need levels: Before you assume that a possible side effect of a medication is going to happen to you you need to know for sure.  Too much magnesium, potassium or calcium can be as bad as too little.  A simple blood test looking at your magnesium and electrolytes will answer that question, and then you have information to tailor what if any supplements to take

a few weeks back a had a ct scan of my abdomen which reveald diverticulitis. take home medication was given and cleared up in the course of a week. for a few days the discomfort has come back feels a bit worse. what are my next steps?

Accepted Answer

Exam needed: Get examined to see if diverticulitis has recurred. If so you will need treatment again. If repeated episodes occur, you may need surgery to remove the diseased part of the descending colon. I'm old fashioned and I still recommend avoiding harsh roughage like popcorn, nuts, seeds,etc.

The non drug treatments for Diverticulitis include::   Diet changes, Increase fiber in diet, Supportive care, Surgery, Bowel resection.

i want to know if there is an otc drug that works like flagyl for diverticulitis.

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately no: But avoiding constipation with high fiber diet/good water intake and/or use of stool softeners may help.

i was told i have diverticulitis. its being treated with cefdinir due to allergies to other drugs. will cefdinir help any? how long should i notice improvement? :) i been having bouts of consipation and narrow like stool. thank you?

: Constipation and narrow-like stool are not the typical symptoms of diverticulitis. Nowadays, most mild to moderate cases of diverticulitis are self limited, no need for antibiotic therapy and cefdinir is not often used for treating diverticulitis. Good luck.

metronidazole (diverticulitis) for 4days 3x400mg. no alcohol, no other drugs. i have bad anxiety, insomnia, sweating, dizziness, thirst. very worried.

Accepted Answer

Metronidazole: Metronidazole CNS toxicity is rare. Toxic levels of can cause lesions in the corpus callosum and dentate nuclei. Patients present with nausea, vomiting, dysarthria, vertigo, and confusion. Not all your symptoms are easily explained by metron. Side-effects and you should be seen and re-evaluated by your doctor. As an example (rare) brain abscess can occur due to diverticulitis. Go and get better.

Yes: Some current GI folks do not buy into the seeds restriction.
I general avoid most watermelon seeds - fun to spit at a tree!

Low residue diet: Low residue diet which is the opposite  of high fiber for 10 to 14 days.

Accepted Answer

No: It is unusual diverticulitis causing urinary symptoms. Please get checked for urinary tract infection. See your doc assp.
