2 problems: Acute diverticulitis is commonly treated with antibiotic such as Flagyl and clindamycin, effective against anaerobic (lack of oxygen areas) bacteria. See prior answer for more details. Intestinal spasm can be a part of diverticulitis, but is really a problem unto itself. There is only one cause of pain in the lower GI tract: abd wall muscle spasm. This is underlying ibs, colon masses/obstruction.
