May be from injury: Sometimes trauma/injury to the nail can cause bleeding from under the nail, which then can cause brown areas under the nail or on the nail itself.  I would watch it and see if grows along with your nail. If it does, then you can eventually clip it off when you clip that part of your nail off.

Fungal infection: If tested positive for fungus by dermatologist, it needs to be treated with oral antifungals for several weeks to clear.

Accepted Answer

Contact dermatitis?: If he is using that hand for routine work and coming in contact with something he is allergic to he can get skin inflammtion and irritation.
 Try to avoid direct contact with some thing that is irritant,  e.g. If detergent than wear Gloves, If gloves are the culprit than use Latex free glove.
 Try OTC Hydrocortisone cream fo 3 days. If not better or getting worse, please see your doctor for propei

Obtain correct dx: I would first make sure that you have the correct diagnosis. Usually there is some type of history or explanation for 'why' a fungal infection might be present. Then, it should be examined and 'proved' to be fungal - rather than something else such as in the inflammatory category. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, topical anti fungal therapy may help - such as clotrimazole 1% twice a day.

It shouldn't : After the treatment you shouldn't have any more flaking.  You may also have seborrheic dermatitis (i know that's a big word) or a hand dermatitis.  I would try rubbing vasaline, petroleum jelly thinly into your hands while they're soaking wet (after shower or hand washing) for 30 seconds then towel dry.

Hand rash: One of the more common otc antifungal creams is clotrimazole, which goes by the brand names lotrimin af athlete's foot cream or lotrimin af jock itch cream (in the United States) and  other common otc antifungal creams include the brand names Monistat 1 (tioconazole), tinactin (tolnaftate), Lamisil (terbinafine), and aloe vesta, baza and carrington antifungals (miconazole). Dressing: Yes, you can you can dress the lesion but don' t be surprise if the lesion spreads anyway.

New gloves needed: Consider a new pair of gloves. Sweating, moisture increase the probability that a fungus or other infection is growing.
See a doctor or skin dermatologist for further advise after diagnosis is made.

was pricked by rose thorn directly in my left hand index finger knuckle. had to pull thorn out of glove! immediately became red, painful, swollen, and loss of mobility. i am concerned it left fungal infection called sporotrichosis.what should i do?

Rose thorn injury: Well sporotrichosis is more of a problem LATER after the initial injury. That's because indeed it's a slow-growing fungus. What happened immediately was probably just the reaction to the injury. Ouch! I would clean it out, apply bacitracin, make sure you're up to date on tetanus then elevate the hand. Check with doc to make sure the joint (knuckle) was not penetrated by the thorn. Hope this helps!

hand sanitizer dried out hands & skin cut & bled & have tiny itchy bumps that won't go away with creams or hydrocortisone. fungal? allergy? bacterial?

Irritant: This is from an irritant reaction because of the alcohol. You may try a hand sanitizer (with a moisturizer)without alcohol or the regular one with a moisturizer and see whether you can tolerate either.
