Do your lumbar: strengthening exercises to increase your paraspinal muscle tone and durability, which in the long term will help strengthen your back against trauma and/or recurrence of symptoms.  Physical therapy is always a good answer for vertebral problems.  I would make sure I do my back exercises everyday for at least 15-20 mins, and avoid situations where you may have to strain your L5-S1 disc.

More info. needed: I often tell my patients the following.  If I (metaphorically)  pull 10 people off the street, at random, who don't have back related problems, and have them get an MRI of their lumbar spine, &gt; 5 of the 10 will have 1 or small 'imperfections' in their disc appearance(s).  In your case the strong probability is that the noted finding on your MRI has no relationship to the cause of your back pain.

Careful exercise: The risk of a recurrence is 5%.  Start by avoiding prolonged positioning & any repetitive twist or bend maneuvers.  If you had physical therapy with your last episode, resume those exercises.  Use of otc medication will help control symptoms.  Cardiovascular workouts may help except for rowing & maybe running. If you did not have physical therapy, you may want to get a session to learn  exercises.

Lumbar disc disease: As with any ailment you need to get expert opinion. If you don't have any weakness in legs, sensory deficits or urinary issues then treating it conservatively would be appropriate at this time , taking Advil (ibuprofen) or Ibuprofen , Physical therapy , heating pad may help it if symptoms persist then see a Neurologist.

: Actually, high-dose intravenous steroids may temporarily shrink the disc protrusion, but unlikely to be a permanent solution.  Desiccation and disc shrinkage may occur spontaneously over 9-10 months, another option.  Discuss with your spinal surgeon specialist.  Several potential scenarios.

i have a disc protrusion at l5 s1, is it ok to do push ups or/and pull ups?

Disc Herniation: Strengthening exercises, such as pull up and pushups,  can be done with a disc herniation dependent on the acuity of the herniation and if you still have symptoms from the injury.  No symptoms, then proceed with good form, progressively.  Start slowly an build yourself up.  If you still have pain r symptoms, then see your physician for evaluation.

Not necessarily : if there is no weakness or bowel or bladder changes it is reasonable and prudent to trial non operative care such as physical therapy

L5-S1: Are you having any pain related to this. If yes then may be serious and you need to discuss with your Dr.

i have a small disc protrusion at l5-s1. could this be causing foot pain?

Accepted Answer

Possible: It could cause pain  if  it was touching the nerve . Usually  the pain is towards the side of the protrusion.
