See your doctor: This condition does not mean that you necessarily need surgery. It can often be helped by physical therapy and other nonsurgical methods. Please see your doctor for an explanation of treatment choices.

Multiple treatments: May people have a disc protrusions or herniations, depends on if have any symptoms such as back or leg pain or numbers or tingling. If no symptoms, no reason to treat, if symptoms, many people will use NSAIDS and physical therapy, if more severe, cortisone injections and finally surgery to help with this problem.

Disc Herniation: A herniated disc is something that can definitely be treated. Conservative treatments should start with an antiinflamatory, physical therapy, possible steroid dose pack (Medrol (methylprednisolone) Dose Pack), and possible pain medications. A steroid injection in the back can also be beneficial. I would also see an Orthopaedic surgeon for a complete work up. Take care and I hope this information is helpful.

Treatable: Lifestyle: I will assume pain. Proper nutrition (get a book called "Foods That Fight Pain" by Neal Barnard, MD), moderate exercise outdoors in the sun (vitamin D), proper hydration, avoidance of common oxidants like tobacco, pacing activities, etc. If you do not accomplish resolution of symptoms, medications (such non-steroidals), lumbar epidural steroid injections, physical therapy, and/or surgery are next.

Fairly common: Lumbar disc bulges are common. Many are found incidentally are not likely to cause symptoms. Aprox 20 - 35% of adults have disc bulging on MRI. The incidence of sciatica symptoms is 2%. Some disc herniations may be resolved with conservative treatment. Some will progress. If you have persistent symptoms despite conservative therapy, then surgery maybe warranted.
