How can you tell the difference between a skin tag and a hpv wart?

Skin tag usually present at neck, arm pits and sometines under breasts and groins. They are tiny(1-2 mm) and sometimes, elongated.
Warts caused by hpv can be anywhere, but commonly, hands/fingers(called hand warts), bottom of feet(called plantar warts) and ano-genital areas (called genital warts). They are usually larger (>5mm).

Most genital warts in men are penile; they can occur on the scrotum, but usually not only there. Single warts are not the norm; usually there are several. New warts are  most common in men younger than you, whereas skin tags tend to become more common with age. These factors all favor skin tag. Discuss again with both doctors, or get third opinion. If doubt remains, maybe remove or biopsy it.

Warts caused by hpv virus are entirely different than skin tags, biopsy (histology of tissue) will easily distinguish one from other besides clinical appearance.

Yes it is possible, but not all skin tags are hpv warts. You should show them to your OB at your next visit.

The HPV strains that cause a growth in that area are not the same as those causing genital warts, All skin warts are members of the HPV family of strains. I wouldn't worry about it.

Warts are also called verruca. Warts are caused by viruses that get into the skin.  There are many kinds of warts with differing appearances.   In the beginning a wart can be a skin colored tiny lump.  When you see a wart on the foot, it  can look like a callous. There is one type of wart that looks like a cauliflower.  Although warts are bumps, they tend to have a flattened surface on the top. Warts are contagious.
  Skin tags are called acrochordons.  They develop in places where there is friction like the underarm, the groin and the neck.  They are small skin growths.   Sometimes they look like a little tag of skin, hanging off  (hence the name). They are not contagious or dangerous.

Skin tags look like regular skin, usually on thin stalk that can be "pulled up" or stretched from the skin.  Often occur under arms, in groin, around neck. Wart has rough surface- like a small cauliflower - often more firm - does not feel like normal skin.  Warts often on hands / feet.  Warts can be frozen off or can apply various topical agents  regularly.  Skin tags can be ligated, frozen or cut.

Both are benign. We don't know the cause of skin tags but they are more common in those who are overweight. They do not need treatment and will not spread or be contagious. It is easy to cut off or freeze them off.
Genital warts are caused by HPV virus and can spread and also be contagious. While they can also be frozen they can be more difficult to eradicate.
