One visable now ?: It is common for infants & toddlers to have loose belly muscles and a ridgelike outpouching may be visable in the middle from the breastbone to the naval+. These muscles need to be loose in pregnancy if nutrients are to move thru the placenta to the inside.As babies get more mobile & start doing "crunches" thru normal activity the muscles tighten & the ridge disappears. If not, it can be fixed >4y.

Increased size: Ventral hernias don't rupture to the outside world, the skin holds the abdominal contents in place.  However, they can become very large and difficult to repair if the contents cannot be easily returned into the abdomen during the repair.

Yes: Surgery can usually cure this problem. An abdominal binder can help control symptoms.

No: If a ventral hernia becomes stuck (incarcerated), it can block off the blood supply to a part of the intestines, which can then turn in to gangrene and bleed. This is associated with severe pain.  Hope this helps!
