Almost always: "Ventral hernia" is a hole the the abdominal wall that can range from the size of your finger tip at the belly button, to a massive defect with ulcerated skin that is stretched out, and hanging down over your thighs. It is frequently thought of as a "simple" problem, but in reality is a complex issue. Best to see a general surgeon for a consultation. You can find one interested in hernia repair on the Americas hernia Society website. Hope this helps!

Yes absolutely: Through surgery, either laparoscopic or open. It depends on your specific hernia as to which option might be better for you. Ventral hernias can impair your quality of life and limit the activities you can do. You should see a surgeon to discuss how complex your hernia repair might be, and what the risks vs benefits are. Good functional outcomes are achievable. Good luck!

Yes: ventral hernia's are very frequently repaired. To approaches are open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. Larger repairs, greater than 1 cm are repaired using mash. Smaller hernias are repaired primarily with suture. Most repair only if symptomatic meaning pain or discomfort. There is a small risk of bowel incarceration or strangulation which presents with escalating pain and a non-reducible lump.
