does diamox used for iih ever make people irritable / angry? trialled time off of the medication but papilodema returned & days i take diamox i feel so angry / easily irritated. thank you :?

Possible: Although Diamox more often causes drowsiness and/ or confusion, emotional reactions are relatively uncommon.  However, you have demonstrated a cause and effect, and this variation needs attention.  Inform your doctor of the outcomes and see if some modifications can successfully be reached.  Alternative meds do exist, and perhaps a new approach is reasonable.

i'm on diamox (acetazolamide) 250mg tid, for chiari malformation.  i'm wondering if dandelion root tea will effect my medication?

Chiari malformation: Yes. Dandelion root is a diuretic and so is Diamox (acetazolamide) (actazolamide). Also, dandelion root may slow the breakdown of Diamox (acetazolamide) and lead to undesirable side-effects. Discuss the dandelion root with your neurosurgeon/neurologist.

i got diagnosed with iih in 2017. treated with acetazolamide which completely reduced optic nerve swelling so longer on medication. can iih cause constant dizziness? had normal ct scan last week and ears checked which are fine?

: Although constant dizziness  could be secondary to medication, anemia, thyroid issues, etc.; but, certainly low grade increased intracranial pressure can be the  culprit.  Recommend objectification via a lumbar puncture, and if pressure is elevated, you should restart your Diamox.

is a shunt better than medication when it comes to iih? i've tried acetazolamide and topamax (topiramate) but both gave me really bad side effects.

can diamox make your vision worse? i have possible iih, so they prescribed diamox. i never had any eye issues since starting the medication, but every time i restart it i get new or worsening eye floaters?

: Diamox does NOT cause floaters in one or both eyes and would consider vitreous or retinal detachments a better explanation.  But increased intracranial pressure can cause obscuration of vision if not well controlled, and your fluctuating use of the medication may be an explanation.  Discuss this with your doctor and consider a visit with an ophthalmologist.

if shunting alone can treat csf leak in iih patients, can appropriate pressure reducing medication (diamox) treat the leak without surgical repair?

Medication is the: first line treatment to manage symptoms but the surgery would be offered if they symptoms are not controlled by the meds or not tolerated.

Unlikely: Although serious dehydration and salt depletion has occurred requiring hospitalization and supportive care, overdose of Diamox (acetazolamide) is very survivable. The half life of Diamox (acetazolamide) is 9 hours and is cleared by the kidneys. Usually fluid support is given and often potassium while maintaining the body's in acid base balance. As Diamox (acetazolamide) clears out, the person gradually recovers--usually without any lasting harm.

I don't know about: overdosing but there are case reports of death after use of  Acetazolamide (diamox).

Diuretic: Acetazolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor leading to loss of bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) in the urine. This can cause metabolic acidosis. In addition all diuretics cause fluid losses, this may lead to low potassium. The primary problem here is the acidosis.
