what is, in your opinion, the most effective medication/drug in treating eczema? what other nonpharmacological tips can you give on treating eczema?

Eczema treatment: Eczema is a disease of skin inflammation and infection. There are also many triggers for its flare like allergies, stress, infections and micronutrient deficiency. The best way to treat it is to avoid irritant like soap, moisturize your skin frequently and apply topical anti-inflammatory medication like cortisone cream or ointment. You might need antibiotic when there is signs of infection.

im pregnant with a boy and have history of eczema. i read that eczema, drug allergies and male fetus are risk factors in a study for amniotic fluid embolism. how true is this ?

Maternal risk: Your history of eczema and allergies place your child at higher chance of atopic conditions. Males are born with more narrow airways which makes them more likely to wheeze with certain illnesses. As the airway grows this effect is less prominent. can hives on the skin look like dyshidrosis eczema? i have bumps that look a lot like dyshidrosis mainly on my arm and elbow i was given my covid shot on spread out. they do react to antihistamine drugs it seems as well?

: Hives are not presenting as blisters which occur in dyshidrotic eczema.

i heard the two drugs my doctor may prescribe for my eczema cause cancer. is this true?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: It depends on which drugs you're referring to. Since eczema is usually caused by allergies, i suggest that you treat the cause and undergo allergy therapy. The best one that i've worked with is lda (low dose antigen therapy). It treats allergies due to foods, inhalants, and chemicals.

can you recommend an over-the-counter topical drug (cream ointment or lotion) for fairly severe eczema on my hands also in om my back calves

Accepted Answer

I : I would try a moisturizer cream that contains ceramides such as cerave cream.  I prefer creams as they are more moisturizing and seem to retain moisture better.  Also, when bathing, use a soapless cleanser such as cetaphil or cerave since these don't dry out your skin quite as much.  If your eczema doesn't improve, consider a visit to a dermatologist who can possibly prescribe a steroid cream or ointment.

are there patients that have been cured of chronic hand and foot eczema by the drug toctino? if toctino does work, do the symptoms come back?

Toctino: Toctino is an anti inflammatory that works well to clear up bouts of eczemabut eczema is a chronic condition so it may come back.

is eczema an auto immune response? if so can drugs such as methotrexate and tnf blockers  aid in the treatment of extreem cases?

Accepted Answer

Not auto-immune: Eczema is not an auto-immune response, but it does involve the immune system.  Usual treatments are emollients (petrolleum jelly) & moisturizers (ex:cetaphyl or cerave creams) as well as topical corticosteroids.One may see use of stronger immunosuppressants under extreme cases, as well as xolair (ige blocker).Am not sure if these are used off-label or not  (i.e. Not yet fda approved for this use?).

i had bad eczema as a kid its been gone for years now but all of of sudden i have psoriasis now its not severe its mild but should i still be worried? should i go get tested for other things ? and if so what?

: There are now a number of excellent treatments for psoriasis. Discuss with your Derm. Psoriasis can have serious long term effects on your health.

Inherited: Eczema is generally inherited.  There is usually family history for eczema, asthma or hayfever, together we call atopy.  These three conditions are essentially the same condition but in different systems: skin, airways or sinuses.

Accepted Answer

Depends: It depends on the severity of the eczema -- generally you want to use the weakest medicine that will fix the problem.  If you have fissures (cracks) in the skin, creams can sting, ointments (vaseline-like) work better.  Strength ranges from Hydrocortisone (over the counter) to very strong prescription meds.
