Not risky: Not risky if done by trained personnel. In hospital does not work economically. I'm sure if you want to spend $5000.00 for hospital and anesthesia charges, you could have it done in the hospital.

Ask surgeon: There are many different levels of sedation possible. However, with the type of sedation done in the dental office, if you are aware during the procedure, you also can move and talk. You didn't feel pain because you also had local anesthesia. This question would be one you would want to ask your oral surgeon/dentist.

Options: Whether you get IV sedation or general anesthesia for dental surgery depends on patient( age, comorbidities, claustrophobia), procedure to be done( length, complexity). Iv sedation makes you sleepy but you may have some awareness and still have some responsiveness to practitioner. General anesthetic will have total unawareness and airway management as you are totally unconscious.

Ask your dentist: This is a question that only your treating dentist should answer.  He\she knows your son's complete medical history, what he\she is prescribing for the sedation, and is responsible for your son's care and wellbeing. Call and ask.

Nothing is 100% safe: But, this is not something you need to fret over. Dentist w/ experience in the pediatric population are very experienced and - next to a parent - they have all the reasons in the world to be very careful. Ask for reassurance since your worries are important too - even if unneeded. Get instructions for before/after and good info. Best!

Talk to your dentist: There are different forms of sedation and anesthetic options in different dental offices, with general anesthesia and IV sedation techniques being more costly.  Talk to your dentist to see if oral sedation and/or oral sedation combined with nitrous oxide/oxygen (laughing gas) is an option.

Not a good idea: In general, it would not be a good idea to take a sedatve as it can be excreted into the breast milk.  If you must take it to get through your dental appointment, the. You should pump and store breast milk, then pump and dump for 2-3 days after.

Nitrous Oxide safer!: Nitrous oxide is very safe and should be first tried.  Local anesthesia can be added once the nitrous oxide is in use for very effective pain control.
