Options: Whether you get IV sedation or general anesthesia for dental surgery depends on patient( age, comorbidities, claustrophobia), procedure to be done( length, complexity). Iv sedation makes you sleepy but you may have some awareness and still have some responsiveness to practitioner. General anesthetic will have total unawareness and airway management as you are totally unconscious.

CONSCIOUS SEDATION: Most in-office dental procedures if done with IV are done under conscious sedation. You will be sedated to the point of being unaware of what's going on and have no recollection of what happened when you awake (amnesia). You will need to have a local anesthetic to numb the area because you body will still react to pain if you don't.

IV and GA: Usually, people tend to be more afraid of invasive procedures, such as dental surgery. The appropriate anesthesia depends on the complexity of the dental treatment and your own comfort zone. With the IV sedation or general anesthesia you will have no recall of the events of the dental surgery or experience any pain. Good luck.

IV or GA?: What type of dental surgery? Do you have any medical problems that require you to be hospitalized for this surgery? General anesthesia is not required for most patients and most dental surgeries, and carries more risk that IV sedation which is usually more than adequate. In fact, most surgeries can be done with local anesthesia alone (or in combination with nitrous oxide\oxygen analgesia).
