Get a CBCT  Scan: It should not take more then a couple of month for the swelling to go down. If there is something else, an oral surgeon should be able to evaluate the swallen area, take xrays or even a CT scan and give you some answers. Good luck hope you will get better.

i was already treated for dental abscess by extraction. and prescribed clindamycin. there is yellow stuff at the site and my lymph node in jaw is still swollen. 2 days since extraction. everything okay?

since a sinus infection & a dental abscess can both cause pain & swelling in the same area of your face (near the nose/cheeks) how can you tell the difference? can an abscess cause phlegm, cough or stuffy/dry nasal passages?

: A perapical dental abscess may have an associated boil like swelling of the gum. Also, if you gently tap the tooth with a spoon it'll cause tooth discomfort. Cough,phlegm,nasal congestion are not characteristic of a dental abscess.

Not a known cause...: Having a dental abscess can cause bacteria and their byproducts to leech into the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body. In healthy people the immune system can usually hold its own but sometimes the bacteria can cause changes to the lining of the arteries or other organs. So if you think that you may have a dental abscess then by all means seek treatment for it.

May not work: Amoxicillin may not work.  You might need anti-anaerobic coverage with Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) or clindamycin.  Antibiotics will sometimes relieve and stabilize the infection after 3-5 days of treatment but dental abscesses usually require drilling to release the abscess and then root canal or dental extraction.

DO NOT!: Please do not self prescribe antibiotics! If under the care of a licensed dentist, he/she will know the right antibiotic, dosage and frequency for you. If you try to do it yourself, not only will it not resolve the abscess (which also requires elimination of the cause of infection) but it will come back with a vengeance and worse. Please go to and get treated by a competent dentist.
