Can a dental abscess cause cardiomyopathy?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Not a known cause...: Having a dental abscess can cause bacteria and their byproducts to leech into the bloodstream and travel to other parts of the body. In healthy people the immune system can usually hold its own but sometimes the bacteria can cause changes to the lining of the arteries or other organs. So if you think that you may have a dental abscess then by all means seek treatment for it.

Indirectly, yes.: Bacteria from a dental abscess can get into the blood stream and cause damage to your heart valves, making your heart less efficient and have to work harder. Check with your cardiologist to see if your heart condition requires antibiotics prior to dental treatment to prevent valve damage.
