That depends: That depends on how big the abscess is. Toxins produced by the abscess can neutralize the local anesthetic and make it so you don't get numb as well. Antibiotics should help shrink the abscess so the "novacaine" will work better. Also the smaller the abscess the faster you will heal after the extraction. If your dentist said to take it, i would.

my daughter has recurring abcesses. some nerves have been taken out of her teeth, but the abscesses are still recurring. they appear all over gums, sometimes 2 at atime. what should i do?

Mouth ulcers?: If the "abscesses are appearing all over the gums, my first thought is that you are not dealing with infected nerves, but most likely a virus-mediated ulceration or ulcers induced by some food(s). If your dentist has been treating this with root canal therapy, maybe you should get a second opinion from a gum specialist?

It should: When decayed, rotten teeth are removed, the gingiva closes up over the socket, and the pathway for bacteria into the bone is removed. At 32 years old, is that what you really want... Dentures? Root canal therapy and proper restorative care is the better choice.

Lymph nodes: Any infection can cause enlarged lymph nodes. What you describe is very possible but not necessarily the cause in your case.

Evaluation: Please be evaluated by a local endodontic specialist. If the lesions have not resolved after this much time, the teeth may need surgery to clean out the lesions or they may be deemed hopeless and extracted. Let a local dentist or endodontist advise you of what is best in your situation.

Treatments necessary: Decay, infected teeth and gums do not stay just in the mouth.  The infection can go to your sinus, or anywhere via your blood stream.  The infection is predominantly bacterial, but may include virus/fungus.  You need to be properly diagnosed and then the infections need to be treated.  Left alone, it will always get worse.  Therefore, your answer is how it should be treated.  Insurance doesn't car.

taking amoxacillin and metronidazole for two days for 2 abscesses in top front teeth.. how long will it take for the pain and swelling to go?

Now: Pain and swelling should be much improved by now. If not, you either need a different antibiotic or a drainage procedre. See dentist or oral surgeon.
