2 months? Not normal: Some degree of pain is normal for at most a few days, not months, after a deep cleaning and removal of deep decay.  If your bite on that tooth is normal, then see  your dentist for a thorough evaluation.  As you wrote, you may  need root canal treatment.

ADA approved paste: Any over the counter Fluoride toothpaste approved by the ada should be both gentle and effective when used 2 to 3 times a day.  I would recommend the simplest Fluoride toothpaste without a lot of extra ingredients. Some of the newer toothpastes such as crest prohealth contain so many ingredients that can irritate sensitive patients.  Just use a name brand simple Fluoride toothpaste.

They go deeper: Periodontists are dentists who have chosen to go on further in the treatment of the gums and bone surrounding teeth.  They still clean teeth like a gp but they also will go deeper into the gums and may even fold back the gums to get to the super deep crud that has formed on the roots below the gum line. They also restore lost gum tissue thru grafting.  Much more but not enuf room here.  Earl.
