deep cut on the palm of my left hand required a single stitch, about 2-3 inches in length.. how long to leave original dressing on before removal, air out, and re-dressing?

Accepted Answer

: If there is minimal bleeding on the bandage, you can gently remove it in about 24 hours. You can add an antibacterial ointment and re-dress it-this can be done daily until the stitches are removed. The goal is to keep it clean and dry to avoid getting an infection. If it looks more red, more swollen or there is pus, then see a doctor right away. Feel better soon! Good luck!

See Hand Doc: Since the palm is a functional surface, numbness is an important symptom.  If can indicate nerve damage, and certain nerves need repair by a hand specialist.  Usually can be dealt with within the days following the original injury.  Call the original treating provider to discuss.

i recently got a deep cut on my palm and index finger. where i got stitches on my palm and all around that area is numb, also my whole pinky on that hand. its been 6 days today since it happened. is this normal?

: Frequently, lacerations in the skin result in severed nerve endings or inflammation that compresses nerves causing numbness. Over time (months, not days) many of these nerve endings either heal or new ones are routed to the area. It is common to have numb areas near traumatic injuries. Be careful of the area to avoid further injuries and work with a physical therapist to regain function.

Wound: That depends. In most instances wounds that have open longer periods of time, are highly contaminated with soil or water from a lake or stream have to be thoroughly cleansed and evaluated prior to being closed. If it cannot then it can heal from inside out.

Oh : Oh my.  It sounds like he has two separate injuries.  The first issue is that he cut his hand deeply enough that you are concerned that he might need stiches. Usually, sutures are placed within 12 hours of an injury due to concerns about possible infection. Cuts to the hand can be quite serious, because of the way the hand is compartmentalized. An infection can spread quickly in the hand and cause loss of function. 
   The second injury is a deep  arm puncture wound contaminated by battery acid. You have done what is termed bathroom surgery to cut away blacked skin but could only debride to a certain level. 
  His tetanus status is unknown. 
  Signs of infection include: redness, swelling, drainage, red streaks, fever, warmth. Your boyfriend has two high risk injuries and uknown tetanus status. I really think that he needs medical attention. If he doesn't get evaluated and develops serious complications the cost physically and financially could be much greater.

Hand numbness: hand numbness after deep arm cut may indicate some minor inflammation from edema or more serious problem such as compartment syndrome which usually results from bleeding or swelling after an injury, please see the hand or plastic surgeon ASAP to prevent any permanent problems

No: Just keep it clean and dry. If you doctor wanted you on antibiotics they would prescribe pills for you. If they did make sure you take the entire course.
