Melanin : Can cause dark discoloration of the gums based on ethnicity and it is normal. 
If the the darker color (e.g. Dark red) is caused by gum disease , it will also involve inflammation due to engorgement of blood due to irritants, e.g. Tartar, plaque, calcular deposits, .. Please see your dentist if it is raising some worries.

Nothing: Dark gums are usually pigment in the tissue.  This is almost like a tattoo or having freckles.  You really cannot change it.

Plaque is a sticky bio film that can be removed with a toothbrush, calculus is a harder and attaches itself to the tooth and root surface and needs to be removed professionally by a hygienist or dentist. See you dentist for an evaluation.
