i am currently taking a very low dose of crestor.  i am 66 and wondering if i should take coq10 as i read that statins and age can reduce your coq10 levels?

What for?: What do you expect Coq 10 for you?  It is prudent to tell you doctor who prescribed Crestor about all the medications, including OTCs you are taking or plan to take.

: Generally safe. The most common adverse effects are muscle pain, abnormal liver enzymes etc. Some have described neurocognitive problems but these are not well documented. Nevertheless when balanced against the risks of hyperlipidemia, statins are safe and well tolerated.

I say ZERO: Most docs disagree, but the ideal dose is zero.  Statins have never been shown to extend life by even a day & can cause serious side effects. See

Statin: As you have good lipid levels, you are looking for the nonlipid benefits of statin. There isn't any evidence there's a difference between the drugs for this effect. Of those you listed Simvastatin or Atorvastatin are probably what i'd choose though can't say prava wouldn't be as good.

is niacin 500mg daily a safe dose for ldl reduction therapy before prescribing a statin for high cholesterol? patient is 29 yr old male

Yes: That is the regular starting dose for niacin.  Have exercise, weight loss and diet already been tried?  That would be my first recommendation.  If Niacin is ineffective, statins my be considered.  Niacin and statins were routinely used together in the past but this has fallen out of favor after the results of the recent aim-high trial.

liver enzymes increased significantly from statin, doctor is giving me the option to lower dose before stopping it. alt is 179. ast is 90. all other enzymes normal. should i do this and just lower the dose or must i stop the statin ?

: I am surprised you have a choice- seems your doc might be comfortable with the lower dose. without knowing more specifics eg reason for the drug it is hard to be specific. If you feel comfortable you may continue with the lower dose under your doc's care

i take an ace inhibitor, statin, beta blocker and low dose aspirin everyday. total chol is 195, trig are 168, ldl is 121 but 8 mos later my total chol is 149, trig are 91 and ldl are 85 is it possible to have more blockage than before this therapy?

: Although it does sound like you were doing a good job of getting your cholesterol under control, you cannot use your lab values to determine whether or not you have  Worsening atherosclerotic heart disease. See your doctor or your cardiologist for a better explanation. Good luck.

microvascular disease causing angina. already taking amlodipine 5 mg (highest dose i could tolerate) isosorbide mononitrate , beta blocker, statin , plavix, losartan. still symptoms. what can i take if i am becoming tolerant to nitrates ???

: Best to discuss with the doctor who is prescribing your medication. They will know what has been tried and all aspects of the rest of your health to be able to choose the right medication.

The risks of statins is very low (may adversely affect the liver but this is rare) and the benefits are great (significant reduction in heart disease and stroke.) discuss this with your doctor, in light of your individual medical conditions.

Muscle pain: Statins are well known to cause muscle pain and to a lesser degree joint pain. You can take vitamins coq10 150- 200 mg per day to help your symptoms. If no releif you have to contact your doctor for further management.
