deep cut right on the knuckle of finger , having numbness, swelling only right around cut & blue in color, could it be infected?

Deep cut finger: Without looking at it, by your description it seems you have a bruise around it, does not seem to be infected, otherwise you will have redness, swelling and puss drainge.And numbness is not unusual with finger laceration as you loose some 
superficial nerves .
But having said that if the cut is deep, you should have had it looked and put stiches in it.You did not tell how old is the cut.

i cut my finger three day ago. from a soup can lid. i it looks like it's healing okay, but there is swelling about 1/2 inch on the knuckle. it also lo?

It depends: It may look like it's healing well but you may have an infection under the skin.  It also depends on how deep the cut was. Please follow up with your primary doctor if pain or swelling increases.

Question 3

2 months ago i cut my knuckle 3/4" wide really deep down to the knuckle on a can lid. i used butterfly sutures & it closed nicely. about 2 weeks ago it started getting sore and now it's swelling. could it be infected? i've had tetanus shot, no meds.

got a few tiny cuts on 1 hand 2 days ago. no swelling, fever, drainage, etc, but there is a reddish spot near (not on) one cut. could it be infected?

Could be: But it does not sound like it is.  Any time you injure an area there may be some degree of an inflammatory reaction.  This does not necessarily mean infection.  If the area of redness increases, becomes more tender, warm to touch or swollen, see a doctor asap.  The hand is very delicate and injured easily.  Be careful and be safe.  Hope this is better soon.

i cut my hand washing dishes on sunday. the cut required 7 stitches. the cut it at the base of my finger. the swelling is getting worse, and even extending to my hand w/ no drainage. how can i tell if its normal swelling or need to go back to doctor?

Not normal : This could be an infection that is spreading and needs to be evaluated as soon as possible.

swelling of right hand (dominant hand) & fingers only. left hand is normal. cut with paper with scissors on daily basis for work. not sure if salt or sugar intake plays a role. not diabetic. i like salty foods. no other symptoms. why only one hand?

Carpal tunnel syndr.: You may have carpal tunnel syndrome in that hand (tightness of the tissues in the wrist), High salt intake can make it worse. Decrease salt intake: reduce it by 1 shake of salt a day on everything, and you will eventually be down to one! and then it will taste just as salty as it does now.  See your primary care doc about your hand, and you can get a firm diagnosis and treatment. or referral.

It depends: It depends on the cause of the joint pain and inflammation. For instance, there are several treatment options if the cause is rheumatoid arthritis. However, there are numerous other possible causes. Have the issue evaluated.

can your knuckle actually be broken if there is no swelling?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Jammed fingers can result in simple sprains or complex fractures. Unfortunately the appearance of the finger doesn't always correspond to the severity of the injury.  Fractures can be present with little or no swelling. But there is usually tenderness and often pain with motion. If you are at all concerned, see your doctor. A simple exam and set of x-rays is all that is needed for diagnosis.

if patient is already on meds for jra can it spread to the knuckles with out having swelling and only pain?

Yes: You do not mention your present meds. This would help. However, you can suffer flares even if you are on meds. Discuss with your doctor.

knuckles got some red swelling,  she used candle wax to decrease swelling and it helps. is it ok? what are the causes? should it be a concern?

Causes of swelling?: There are many possible causes of swelling, pain and/or redness of the knuckles.  These include overuse, sprains, arthritis (wear &amp; tear and rheumatoid are the most common), infection and injury.  Candle wax may provide temporary relief by warming the joints, but, due to the high risk of burns, in my mind, it's not OK.  If your arthritic joints are bothering you, by all means, consult a doctor.
