Don't chew gum.
Avoid hard crunchy foods. Don't open wide.Use moist heat over the jaw joints and muscles of the face. Taking an anti inflammatory medication, like ibuprophen 3 times a day for a week to 10 days. See a physical therapist  and dentist trained in treating tmj.

Great question!: Do some research on the prospective dentist's credentials.  How long in practice? Success rate ( speak to other patients).  Is his/hers training a weekend course suggesting a dabbling approach or has the dentist spent considerable time in learning how to treat the TMJ patient?  My training background involves 100's of hours which most of us consider to be the bench-mark.  Good luck.

Need complete workup: Many patients have clicking and deviation of the TMJ and do nothing about it. In order to be properly evaluated, have radiographs taken of the condyles in and open and closed position and follow through. A nightguard is one modality of treatment, but the etiology needs to be determined first.
