It should: Oral contrast and intravenous contrast is needed to evaluate if there's compensation of the liver. Ultrasound also can show blood flow direction to further help in evaluating the liver

i have 2 alcoholic family members who have liver cirrhosis.. concerned about haemochromatosis. but cbc, lft, ct scan,mrcp normal. gi dr said not worry?

You don&#x27;t have it: If all of those tests are normal, and hopefully including a normal iron panel, then you don&#x27;t have hemochromatosis.  The only other concern would be if you knew that your relatives had the genetic mutation for hereditary hemochromatosis.  Doesn&#x27;t sound like it though.  Their alcoholism was probably the cause.  ONLY get the genetic test IF they are positive.

Sometimes: Cirrhosis DX based on symptoms, physical exam, and history of risk factors such as alcoholism. Obesity is now most common cause for fatty liver. Fatty infiltration can cause enlargement of liver.Cirrhosis usually causes hardening with scarring and reduction in liver size. Ct exam can sometimes detect fatty infiltration by reduced density of liver in some cases. Most accurate DX is biopsy of liver.

: CT scan does not show much change in the liver until the disease is far advanced and liver shrinks in size.
The best tests for cirrhosis are blood tests(Liver function tests(LFTs) which can reveal overall health of the liver.If the LFTs are high, then a needle biopsy of liver is indicated to check for cirrhosis.

Depends: It depends on appearance of liver. With cirrhosis the liver may appear more nodular in appearance versus smooth echo texture but to truly determine whether or not cirrhosis is present or to what degree your liver has been damaged you need a biopsy.

Ascites: If you have cirrhosis of the liver then ascites would be common. If the last ultrasound was normal that is a good sign but does not eliminate the issue of it reoccurring, it is unfortunately a part of the disease process.

can taking 65 mg iron supplements for 3.5 weeks cause cirrhosis of the liver? gallbladder issues? ct scan in march showed normal healthy liver. blood tests all came back normal except a/g ratio was 2.4. albumin was 4.8 which is normal for me?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your iron intake will not cause cirrhosis . Wish you good health!

Maybe: It's also not uncommon just have a big benign node here. With no nearby tumors seen, the node is unlikely to be malignant.

is it possible to have multiple benign cysts in liver, and spleen and this be diagnosed as liver cirrhosis without scans?

not really: It's not possible to even know you have benign, or any cysts in your liver without some kind of scan (ultrasound, CT, or MRI) or direct visualization by a surgeon. However, the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis can be made with a thorough history, complete physical exam, and laboratory studies without needing a scan at all but it would help to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of symptoms

hello dr/s! in a bile duct obstruction that remains silent or goes unrelieved, how many years does it take before it eventually progress to liver cirrhosis?

: This will depend on if the obstruction is complete. They you die in a few weeks.  If intermittent may take years or never.
