As I understand...: As I understand it a crown lengthening is using your OWN ROOT and whats left of the top of your tooth to place a top or crown on whereas an implant would involve extraction of the root and an implantation of a "new" root and tooth.  I would vote for the  former

Your choice: Both treatment options are viable. Can't tell how strong your actual tooth is, but i always prefer to restore natural teeth, if possible. There are no guarantees either way, and if the implant has difficulty integrating into your bone, you will be stuck without a tooth. Extract only if unrestorable.

No: Hopefully you can keep this tooth and not need an implant later. If you need an implant on an adjacent area, the small amount of bone taken off with crown lengthening won't be enough to Prohibit implant placement.

After healing, often 8 - 10 weeks, the tooth preparation is completed and the impression for the crown is made.

The : The dentist restoring that tooth has to be able to fit that crown on solid tooth structure. The edge of the new crown has to be in harmony with your bone and gum tissue. If the dentist tries to make the edge of the crown too far below the gum surface to grab onto the tooth, he/she will be invading a very sensitive space.

Violating this space can cause many, many problems for you, including pain, bleeding, swelling, inflammation, food trapping, and bone loss. If your tooth is as broken down as you say, then the tooth lengthening is probably necessary. Insurance doesn't alway cover every part of your treatment, and patients need to understand that that is not the dentist's fault... Its how the policies are written.

The alternative is to extract the tooth and place an implant, but that would be far more expensive than the treatment you have described.

It is needed to get below the defects created by decay and/or fracture.  It can be very beneficial but has limitations as well.  Talk to your dentist about it.

A surgical flap is made around the tooth and the bone and tissue are lowered with a laser, scalpel or  handpiece under anesthetic.

Should: Some dentist consider themselves as super dentist can do everything. I believe in referring to someone who does this almost dail. The best to use is a periodontist. They deal with the gum tissue.
